Housing scam in Lenasia

2010-09-08 07:09

At least 60 government and privately owned land sites were sold illegally to people in Lenasia.

“The department is conducting an audit on all sights which were reported stolen and sold to people,” a statement by the Gauteng local government ministry said yesterday.

“This is a big issue for us because we want to send a message against anybody who would think of selling government land. We want them to know that they will be arrested and sent to jail.”

The ministry would use the audit information to remove those who bought land illegally, obtained eviction orders, and demolish properties that had been built on the land.

“The department’s anti-fraud and corruption unit is working closely with the police.”

No arrests had been made yet but people were coming forward with more information.
