Feeling like nothing is going right and doors are being shut in your face? Biting your lip so you don’t shout at everybody who comes your way?

Psychologist Dr Trish van Zyl says almost all people will be stressed at some point in their lives. In the end, she says, “it’s how we deal with what causes us stress that makes or breaks a person”.

Van Zyl shares some tips for avoiding or reducing stress.

1. Identify the sources of stress

The first rule of dealing with stress is to pinpoint the source of your stress.

2. Devise a plan to deal with stress

Once you know what causes your stress, think about how best to avoid it. If it is a person who is causing you stress, try limiting the amount of time you spend with that person. If time management is the problem, try waking up early and doing your work earlier than you normally would.

3. Talk about your problems

A problem talked about is a problem half solved. Instead of bottling things up, speak to somebody, be it a friend or a professional. Talking makes you feel better and ideas on how you can solve the problem will start flowing.

4. Change your attitude

More often than not, people are frustrated by something or someone because they don’t like how this or that works. Before pointing a finger at something or somebody, do some soul searching to see if you are not the cause of the problem. Be honest about it. If you are, change your attitude. It will go a long way towards shielding you from unnecessary stress.

5. Take time to relax and do what you love

Everybody has that one hobby that makes them forget the worries of the world. Take advantage of that whenever you feel as if you’re sinking. This may seem crass when problems are piling up but it works. Being calm enables you to think clearly.
