The Easter holidays can be long if you’re faced with young, bored minds. Here are a few options for keeping your children busy during the long weekend.

Johannesburg

Rand Show

Want to give your kids an experience that ranks right up there with meeting the Easter bunny? Take them to the Rand Show.

From snow world, to science and a fun fair – it’s all there.

Where: Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec

When: March 28 to April 1, 9am – 7pm

Cost: R20 for kids aged 6 to 12 years, and kids below the age of 6 years enter for free

Feed the ducks

Ducks and geese are ready for small people to feed them at dams around Johannesburg. Adult supervision is essential. All three venues also provide plenty of lawn space for children to play, fly kites or roller blade, and for parents to picnic.

Where & when: Zoo Lake (9am to 5pm), Emmarentia Dam (9:30am to 5pm) and Gillooly’s Farm (7am to 7pm)

Cost: Free

Visit the animals

Enjoy an adventurous ferry tour around the zoo. Visit lions, tigers, camels, polar bears and much more.

Where: Joburg Zoo

When: March 28 – April 25, 10am – 1pm

Cost: Kids under 7 years pay R60 entrance fee and those from 7 to 13 year old pay R75

Cape Town

Easter egg maze

Discover chocolate treasures hidden in the Lindt Gold Bunny Maze.

Where: Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre, Barrow Court

When: Until March 31

Times: 12pm – 1pm; 2pm to 3pm; 4pm –5pm and 6pm – 7pm

Cost: Free

Petting zoo

Give tykes and toddlers a chance to cuddle rabbits, ducklings, lambs and piglets.

Where: V&A Waterfront’s Blue Shed craft market

When: March 29 – April 7, 11am – 5pm

Cost: R20 per entry for 15 to 20 minutes

Sand art

Kids can create their own cards using coloured sand that sticks onto the picture of their choice.

Where: V&A Waterfront’s Blue Shed craft market

When: March 29 – April 7, 10am – 5pm

Cost: R10 to R25, depending on the design and colours used

Durban

Easter egg hunt

A hundred easter eggs will be hidden around the facility and kids can collect as many as their bags can hold.

Where: uShaka Marine World

When: March 29 – 31, 7am – 5pm

Cost: R100

Sandy Bigara’s Superstar Kids show

The show is packed with singing, dancing, action and drama as well as puppetry and movement. Kids can sing along with Sandy.

Where: TAPT Community Centre

When: April 2 – 5, 11am to 12pm

Cost: Free
