To kick off the new year City Press looks to our favourite celebrities for some fitness guidance and inspiration.

Known for his role as the sexy heartthrob Oupa on Rockville, Lehasa Moloi shared some of his tips and tricks to getting in spectacular shape this year.

I asked Moloi what his workout regiment consisted of. “I work out every day. I’m a big fan of weights, so four days a week I train a body part a day and stretch, then running and cardio make up the rest of my training week,” he responded. He trains for an hour or two on weight days and does 30 to 40 minutes on the treadmill or bike as part of his three cardio days.

It’s hard to imagine how someone with such an immensely busy schedule would be able to find the time and energy to keep up such a vigorous routine but, he says, “I wake up at 4am and hit the gym. It’s easier if you make it a way of life.” He added: “that’s the only way you will achieve the most desirable outcomes from it. It can’t be just another resolution.”

He confesses that he only started focusing on his fitness in 2005 and hasn’t looked back since. “Having been at this for so long, I get cranky and find myself out of my comfort zone when I don’t work out regularly. For me it’s about more than how I look, it’s about how I feel.”

If you’re looking at making fitness a constant priority, here are some tips from Lehasa to get you going:

Lehasa’s fitness tips

1. Remember to ease into it

2. Set goals and determine what you want to achieve

3. Change your routine every month or so

4. Stretch well; I do what is known as dynamic stretching. More importantly, and something that people often forget is to stretch after. Stretching after a workout is essential for muscle growth

5. You need extra protein when you work out like I do. I prefer taking Supplements SA’s Whey Isolate and Casein (Supplements SA Slow Release protein) at night
