Hunt hoping to wrap up Mwaruwari signing

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt hopes to wrap up the signing of former Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari this week.

The former Jomo Cosmos forward had been training with the Pretoria side after returning to the country from Portsmouth in England, Hunt said at the weekend, where has was unable to secure a contract extension.

“I’m going to try sign him (Mwaruwari) on Monday,” Hunt said after his side’s goalless draw to Free State Stars in Atteridgeville on Saturday evening.

“We have to. We need to be a little bit better.”

Hunt’s comments came as a surprise after the Matsatsantsa boss admitted last week he was disappointed that Mwaruwari had not shown up for training.

According to Hunt, the striker went missing and had not contacted the United coach.

“I haven’t seen him. He has gone walkabout,” Hunt said after his outfit drew 0-0 with Mamelodi Sundowns in a Pretoria derby earlier last week.

“He is certainly like the missing link and we need something like that up front.

“I thought I would give him a chance and play him, but he has left … I haven’t seen him for the last week-and-a-half. It’s a bit disappointing.”

The Zimbabwean international enjoyed spells with some of Europe’s top clubs throughout his career, including stints at Auxerre, Portsmouth, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.

Mwaruwari (34), had earlier said, upon returning to South Africa, that if he was unable to secure a contract in the country, he would retire.
