‘I assaulted her all over her body’

2012-08-15 06:47

A KwaZulu-Natal primary school caretaker who escaped from a psychiatric hospital in 2005 told a court he assaulted his wife and woke to find her dead, according to a report.

Madhan Maharaj confessed to the crime in a statement read out in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court yesterday.

In it, he said he assaulted Caroline Rajah with the metal handle of a fishing net, reported The Witness Online.

“I assaulted her all over her body with this handle and I may have even used my fists because I was that angry.”
He said he had been angry with her because he suspected her of infidelity.

Maharaj said he went to sleep next to her and awoke the next morning to find she was dead.

He was arrested and was sent to a psychiatric hospital for observation. He told the court he escaped by climbing from the roof and jumping over a boundary fence.

After being on the run for seven years, police and the KwaZulu-Natal crime intelligence unit tracked him to a primary school in Phoenix, Durban, on Monday.

He had been living and working there as a caretaker.

He was expected to appear in court today for sentencing.
