I can take a punch on the chin, says Benni

2010-05-20 11:36

Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has finally broken his silence

following severe criticism for failing to address the media on Tuesday.

After being persuaded to talk by Safa chief executive Leslie

Sedibe, the West Ham United striker today said he was happy to be part of the

camp and was hoping to make the final 23-man squad for the 2010 Fifa World

Cup.

He said he had not been distracted by the negative publicity he got

recently regarding his weight: “I am grown up and can take a punch on the chin.

The whole issue about Benni this and that has not affected me at all.”

He said he had been surprised by the bad publicity as he considers

himself a nobody: “I am just an individual who is part of the team and I am

nobody if the team is not there.

I know I can bring success that the team is

trying to achieve but I am really nothing without the team.”

McCarthy acknowledged that he was not yet where he wanted to be in

terms of fitness.

He said he was working hard and believed with the specific

training programme that he was following he would be in good shape for the June

event.

“I am feeling much better now than when I first joined the camp.

I

am now catching up for all the lost time when I was injured,” he said.
