I fear the predators

2012-01-07 18:12

As a rule, I never wear short skirts in town. The one time I did, not even the fact that I was with two capable men made me feel safe from possible attack.

I’m not blind to my participation in the patriarchy that seeks even to police what “good girls” should wear in public. But that general rule is easier and comes with less admin?– besides, I don’t have very many short skirts in my wardrobe anyway.

My biggest gripe with the taxi drivers at the Noord Street taxi rank groping girls in short skirts is how these men distance themselves from being part of the solution.

“These young girls need to learn to respect the community and themselves,” I heard a male commuter say on radio. But if there are lessons to be learnt by the youth, should it not be our elders who teach us?

If the taxi drivers were so concerned by the lack of morals demonstrated by short skirts, they should have spoken to the girls in the same way a father would guide his daughter.

The only lesson I have learnt is: never wear one.
