I was not helped properly – Midmar swimmer’s fiancée

2014-02-11 08:39

The fiancée of Herman van Straten has criticised the event planners, saying she was not helped properly.

Van Straten (43) went missing during the Midmar Mile swim near Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

Shane Jones said she was “pushed around from pillar to post” when trying to report that Van Straten was missing, The Star reported today.

Jones said organisers went ahead with the next event after he went missing.

However, Lieutenant Jack Haskins from the police’s search and rescue unit said organisers had placed restrictions on the race that followed and no one younger than 13 was allowed to compete.

Jones said she and Van Straten’s family were struggling to come to terms with his disappearance.

“It doesn’t feel real. I’m trying to make myself believe that he is in a hospital somewhere,” the newspaper quoted her as saying.

She said Van Straten was “extremely fit” and swam three times a week.

Race director Wayne Ridden reportedly offered his sympathy to the Van Straten family.

Police said yesterday that they were still searching for Van Straten.
