ID wants Parly to call SABC chair

2010-05-24 13:58

Chairperson of SA Broadcasting Corporation board Ben Ngubane must

explain to Parliament why the board was circumvented on the appointment of Phil

Molefe as head of news at the public broadcaster, the Independent Democrats (ID)

said today.

“The ID will certainly call on the chairperson of Parliament’s

communications portfolio committee to summon the SABC chair to Parliament to

come and explain his sudden flouting of due process,” said ID leader Patricia de

Lille.

The majority of SABC board members this weekend decided to declare

null and void a decision by Ngubane and chief executive Solly Mokoetle to

appoint Molefe, and to continue screening candidates for the post.

The board also said it would seek a meeting with Communications

Minister Siphiwe Nyanda. De Lille welcomed the move.

Board members last week expressed shock and surprise to learn of

Molefe’s appointment. They said they were not consulted and were still waiting

to hear recommendations from an interview panel on appointing a permanent

successor to ousted news chief Snuki Zikalala.

The clash between Mokoetle and the new SABC board comes barely six

months after it was constituted and carries an echo of the power struggle

between the old board and former chief executive Dali Mpofu that crippled the

organisation.

Press reports have suggested Molefe was appointed under political

duress from the presidency.
