IEC chair shortlist is out

2014-10-31 16:17

A former Democratic Alliance member of Parliament, a former ANC national executive committee member and a media guru are all in line to fill former Independent Electoral Commission chairperson Pansy Tlakula’s shoes.

Tlakula resigned in September after it was found that her role in the R320-million lease for the IEC’s headquarters in Centurion in 2009 undermined the integrity of the commission.

The Office of the Chief Justice this afternoon published a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed next month.

The shortlist was decided this week by a panel chaired by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and comprising the heads of various chapter-nine institutions, including Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

Candidates must have a legal background to be considered for the position. They are as follows:

1. Sheila Camerer, former DA MP and ambassador;

2. Hlaleleni Matolo-Dlepu from the Black Lawyers’ Association;

3. Professor Mzamo Gumbi;

4. Queendy Gungubele, a director on, among others, the Eskom board;

5. Salome Ngwanamathiba Khutsoane, an advocate who serves on various boards;

6. Janet Love, former ANC national executive committee member and national director of the Legal Resources Centre;

7. Linky Mamoepa;

8. Vuma Mashinini, a special projects adviser to President Jacob Zuma;

9. Koekie Mdlulwa, a director on various boards;

10. Lumko Mtimde, chief executive of the Media Development and Diversity Agency;

11. Zwoitwaho Nevhutalu, a pastor by profession;

12. Motlatjo Ralefatane, from the Road Accident Fund;

13. Jonas Ben Sibanyoni, a former ANC MP; and

Any person is allowed to send comments on the shortlist to Mogoeng before November 12.
