IEC counts 46 political parties for election

2014-03-14 10:02

The Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) is sifting through its data to determine how many parties will contest the May 7 elections.

“We are busy working through the data; on Tuesday we counted 46 [political parties],” IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said today.

“The officials are segregating the data because some of the political parties will contest in certain provinces [and not nationally]. So officials have to make sure [every] party’s information is correct.”

Bapela said she hoped the process would be completed by today.

The deadline for parties to submit their candidate lists and deposit cheques to contest the elections is 5pm on Wednesday.

Parties contesting elections have to pay R45 000 for each province and R200 000 nationally.

Bapela said on Wednesday that the IEC would evaluate and verify the documents and candidate lists and inform all parties of any non-compliance by March 18.

“Political parties will then have until March 24 2014 to rectify any non-compliance.

“The lists of candidates will then be made public from March 28 2014 to March 31 2014,” she said.

Members of the public and political parties have until April 1 to object to any candidate.
