IEC threatens end of the party for 21 nonpayers

2014-08-22 16:44

The Independent Electoral Commission intends to deregister 21 political parties – among them the Dagga Party, the Black Consciousness Party, the Khoisan Party and God’s People’s Party.

The IEC said the parties, which aren’t represented in a legislature, must renew their registration annually in terms of the Electoral Commission Act.

The 21 parties named by the IEC have another week – until August 29 – to renew their registration. The commission said it had advised the parties “in writing” and their names had been published in “the local newspaper where they are registered”.

If they don’t renew their registration, a notice of deregistration will be published in the Government Gazette.
