IEC to extend voting hours in Joburg

2011-05-18 10:43

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will extend voting hours in areas of Joburg where there are high voter turnouts.

Voting hours would be extended until every person had cast their ballot in places like Meadowlands, Eldorado Park and Diepkloof, where huge voter volumes had been reported, said IEC electoral officer Sy Mamabolo.

He said there had been technical problems with voting in Gauteng early today, but no major hiccups at voting stations.

Non-functioning scanner machines, known as zip-zips, was reported on the West Rand, which had slowed down the voting process, he said, apologising to voters.

Mamabolo said most voting stations in Gauteng opened at 7am or soon after. He said there had been no disruptions in the security hotspots identified before election day.

These included the areas of Zandspruit, Drieziek, Diepsloot in Joburg, Barcelona in Ekurhuleni, and Sekampaneng in Tshwane.

“The voting process is proceeding normally. Security agencies are closely monitoring the situation,” Mamabolo said at the province’s IEC results centre in Auckland Park.
