IPL bonuses to be recovered – Mbalula

2012-04-26 16:49

The Indian Premier League (IPL) bonuses paid to Cricket South Africa (CSA) staff who were not entitled to receive them will be recovered, Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has said.

“There is a civil process to be launched for those who are (now) outside CSA to be pursued. Some of the issues referred to state organs like the Hawks have been followed up. They have been to CSA and they are in the process of following up issues raised by the Nicholson report,” he said.

Mbalula met with the CSA board in Sandton today. He also said an agreement was reached that the current board should stay in power until CSA’s annual general meeting, which will take place at the end of September. Along with the bonus repayments, the following decisions were taken:

» The CSA board has accepted a request from the ministry to broaden the steering committee to include members of the South African Sports Confederation, the Olympic Committee (Sascoc) and the department of sports and recreation.

» The appointment of a new acting president and a new acting chief executive.

» John Myburgh SC has been appointed by the Bar Council as the independent chairperson of suspended chief executive Gerald Majola’s disciplinary hearing. The Bar Council has also been requested to appoint an independent prosecutor. The time frame for the completion of Majola’s hearing is May 31.

» The steering committee will “interpret the application of the Nicholson recommendations (that followed the inquiry into the affairs of CSA, led by Judge Chris Nicholson) in the best interests of CSA” and will provide monthly feedback to the minister.

Mbalula said it was not within his power to have the board removed as it is a decision that lies with CSA and that removing the board could have been detrimental to the recovery of the board as it has followed up well on Nicholson’s report.

“The board has come to accept that they could have played a better role at the time they were supposed to. Their political mandate in terms of serving on the board depends on their structures. This particular interim structure has already set the processes in motion with regards to the implementation,” he said.
