Icasa to hold porn channel public hearings

2012-01-11 14:53

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) will hold public hearings into TopTV’s planned porn channel on Monday.

Icasa wants all those who made written representations and any other interested persons to be present at the hearings at its offices at Pinmill Farm, Sandton.

Proceedings will start at 10am.

Opponents of the porn channels have threatened to boycott TopTV if it starts broadcasting pornography.

The Cape Town-based Family Policy Institute is one of the organisations that have made submissions to Icasa but will not be present at the public hearings.

On Digital Media, TopTV’s parent company, applied for three 24-hour porn channels last year amid strong opposition.

The Film and Publication Board also opposes the porn channels.

On Tuesday, Icasa’s Jubie Matlou confirmed that the utility would lodge an urgent court application to stop TopTV from launching the three channels without approval.

Each channel will be available to subscribers for R99 a month.

The Family Policy Institute’s Errol Naidoo said they opposed the channels because they would break down marriages and destroy the country’s future.

“This is a social evil we don’t need in our country,” he said.

Naidoo threatened that they would call for a massive boycott of TopTV should it go ahead with the channels.
He said the institute has written to churches all over SA to ask for support.

“Eight churches with up to 8 million members have already agreed to support the boycott,” Naidoo said.

» The hearings will be held at:
Pinmill Farm
