If my clothes fit …

2011-11-05 08:34

Theodorah Sejake was a chubby child.

Now 24, this Soweto resident considers herself a chubby adult. But unlike many women who are dissatisfied with the image they see in the mirror – or are constantly told they should be – Sejake is comfortable in her skin.

“I may not be slim, but I consider myself to be healthy, which is why I’ve never had an obsession with losing weight,” she says. “I believe I am fine the way I am.”

A recent Body Mass Index (BMI) test she took when joining a gym, showed that, at 74kg, the 1.56m tall Sejake is medically obese (her BMI is 30).As a result of her BMI, Sejake gave up “eating a slab of chocolate a day”.

But her body confidence remains undented by the “fear factor”. Sejake, a size 16 in jeans, considers herself just as healthy as some of her slimmer friends, and fitter than many.

“There have been times where my friends and I would take long walks and when we would reach our destination, they would be more tired than I would be,” she says.“I try to be as active as possible and if I can still find clothes that fit me, then I am cool with my weight.”
