Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says he has smoked the proverbial peace pipe with Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Thulani Serero.

The pair had an ugly fallout ahead of Bafana Bafana’s Fifa World Cup qualifier against Botswana in Durban in September.

The player was sent packing without kicking a ball in that match.

But yesterday, at the announcement of the Bafana team to face world champions Spain on November 19, Igesund told a packed media briefing: “We have spoken and he has apologised. He is a young man and is still prepared to play for his country. We can’t hold grudges forever.”

Igesund then surprised all and sundry when he said the player – one of the most talented footballers of the current generation – was not in the squad as he had asked to be excused.

“Thulani asked me to leave him out of this game as he is still working on cementing his place in the Ajax team,” explained Igesund.

Serero played for most of the Uefa Champions League match against Celtic on Wednesday night.
