Igesund undoubtedly the right Bafana coach

2012-06-09 20:24

It came as no surprise this week when Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund emerged as favourite to succeed the sacked Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach. South African football enthusiasts still believe Igesund should have been given the position before Mosimane.

Igesund was overlooked for the top job after he guided four Premier Soccer League clubs – Manning Rangers during the inaugural season, 1996/7; Orlando Pirates (2000/1); Santos (2001/2) and Mamelodi Sundowns (2006/7) – to four titles.

Now, supporters’ calls have intensified after his heroics at Swallows in the past two seasons. After saving The Beautiful Birds from relegation in his first season (2010/11), he took the club to within a whisker of winning the championship only to be pipped at the death by Orlando Pirates.

To his credit, Igesund has been able to transform “nobodies” into superstars, as has happened with the likes of David Mathebula and Lerato Chabangu at Swallows.

Bafana would be a different team under him as he would go for hungry players who would be prepared to make sacrifices for the nation.

He has had unsuccessful coaching spells at Ajax Cape Town and Maritzburg United, so the man knows the highs and lows of South African football.

It is about time the South African Football Association did the honourable thing by appointing Igesund as Bafana Bafana head coach. I mean really, what more does he need to do to prove himself?
