Illegal miners arrested

2010-04-22 08:03

Police operations in Welkom have led to the arrest of more than 50

illegal miners on various charges including murder, possession of stolen

property and conspiracy.

Captain Stephen Thakeng said police had received information of

illegal miners underground who would surface and stay in a room at G-hostel in

Thabong.

Thakeng said: “On arrival ten males who were mainly from Lesotho

were found in possession of five mine hats, three mine lamps, three belts, three

pairs of gumboots and three packets of Morvite porridge.”

Thakeng said the men were all arrested for the possession of mine

property, conspiracy and not having documents to be in the country.

Police said three men were also arrested for crimes including

murder and robbery. They were on the Free State police’s wanted list in Welkom

for cases dating back to 2007 and 2008.

Thakeng said in other similar operations an additional 40 illegal

miners were arrested by mine security personnel helped by police.

“Most of them were undocumented persons from our neighbouring

countries such as Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe,” he said.
