In-fighting may delay FS ANC conference

2012-06-06 11:32

In-fighting in the Free State ANC may lead to the postponement of the party’s provincial conference.

The conference was originally scheduled for next week, but party insiders say with three regions – Motheo, Lejweleputswa and Thabo Mofutsanyana – still to hold their regional conferences, the provincial conference might be delayed.

The new date for the conference is expected to be announced today after a meeting between National Executive Council (NEC) deployees and the provincial working committee.

Mxolisi Dukwana, ANC provincial treasurer and a contender for the position of provincial leader, said today’s meeting would discuss branches’ complaints about and problems with the auditing of membership in the run-up to the regional conferences.

“We have sent several requests for intervention and memorandums listing our problems with the way things are being handled in the run-up to the provincial conference, but received no response from the national ANC leadership yet,” said Dukwana.

He said some branches had already elected leadership but found that parallel structures had been formed.

“We cannot allow some people in the province to disregard the rules and procedures of the ANC like that,” said Dukwana.

William Bulwane, spokesperson for the provincial chairperson and Premier Ace Magashule, said the conference was happening next weekend as planned.

He also confirmed that three regions still had to hold their regional conferences.

“These regions must have their conferences this week, so that the provincial conference can go ahead as planned,” he said.

Dukwana and the provincial secretary, Sibongile Besani, are part of a faction in the ANC, The Regime Change Group, who is opposing Magashule.
