Melbourne, Australia – Kevin Anderson has made no secret of his love of the great outdoors.

After an on-court adventure at the Australian Open on Monday, where he rallied from two sets down for the first time in his career to beat Jiri Vesely, the South African sat down with ATPWorldTour.com to discuss his favourite extreme sports and travel bucket list.

If you could have any job in the world outside of tennis, what would it be?

I really enjoy cricket, so I’d like to maybe be a batsman or a bowler for the South African cricket team. That would be great. I played until I was about 10 years old. It’s probably my next favourite sport behind tennis. I really enjoy watching it in all forms of the game.

When I’m out here, we try and go to a few games. We went to the Melbourne Cricket Ground yesterday to watch Australia and England, that was really good.

We know you like to get outdoors. What’s the most extreme activity you’ve ever done?

I think paragliding a couple of times. I did it once in California with my University of Illinois team and then I did it with my wife in Queenstown in New Zealand at the beginning of last year. It was really fun.

I’m not too much into extreme sports; you have to be so careful with tennis. I just really enjoy mountain hiking and getting out there. We went on a great hike in Queenstown as well and out in California. There’s some really nice trails and it’s just something I’ve always enjoyed doing.

Have you got anything on the bucket list?

There are a couple of countries I’d really like to visit. Exploring more the south island of New Zealand, I think that’s up there. I’d love to take some of my friends on a trip to South Africa. I’d also really like to go to the Scandinavian countries, like Norway and north Sweden. I really enjoy the travel side and seeing really cool things in nature. I think they would be some fun things to do.

Your wife was on the women’s golf team at university. Be honest, what’s better: your golf swing or Kelsey’s tennis strokes?

I think I’m a little bit better at golf and I think she would agree with me! I think tennis players pick up golf quite easily. I’ve been playing for a while, although this past year’s been tough with elbow surgery. It’s been really hard to get on the golf course. I think I’ve got her on that one!

What are three things you couldn’t live without?

My phone … I know it sounds terrible! I’ve been playing the guitar, so that’s something I’ve been travelling with. I’ve played it almost every day for the past 18 months. It’s been something that’s really kept me busy and entertained. I really like my iPad as well for reading. There’s so much down time in tennis, so those are some useful things to have.

Who would your dream mixed doubles partner be?

I’d really like to play with Martina Navratilova. Everything I’ve heard, her hands, the way she goes about her tennis ... She’s obviously a legend in the game, so I think it would be really fun to play with her.

If you could play against any player on any court, who would it be and where?

Playing Roger Federer in a US Open night match on Arthur Ashe Stadium would be really fun. I think it would be exciting. There would be a lot of emotions to deal with. He’s very comfortable out there with all that. I haven’t experienced that, so I think that would definitely be a big challenge.
