Banana bread was Reeva Steenkamp’s favourite food. And last night, at an intimate dinner to commemorate what would have been their daughter’s 30th birthday, June and Barry Steenkamp would have served banana bread for dessert.

They would have remembered Steenkamp at an emotional family dinner at their home in Port Elizabeth yesterday evening.

“Reeva really loved banana bread, she always baked it for everyone,” a source close to the family told City Press.

The source added that June and Barry are ignoring all media coverage of the case in a bid to deal with their pain. “They are devastated, they are like deer in headlights,” he said.

Steenkamp would have had thirty candles on her cake yesterday. Instead, ex-lover Oscar Pistorius was charged with her murder and with the illegal possession of ammunition in the Pretoria Magistrates' Court. A trial date was set for March 3 and the matter has been transferred to the North Gauteng High Court.

Steenkamp’s friend and ex-housemate, Gina Myers, has spoken about Steenkamp’s culinary finesse, and particularly of her banana bread baking skills. Myers cried inside the court room yesterday. She is one of 107 state witnesses listed in the indictment served on Pistorius in court.

The indictment states that on the night Steenkamp was killed, witnesses at Pistorius’ upmarket Pretoria home heard a woman scream, “followed by moments of silence, then heard gunshots and more screaming”.

It also confirms that the “deceased had locked herself in the toilet cubicle”.
