Ipid to investigate stray bullet baby death – Mthethwa

2013-05-13 16:26

The police's watchdog body would probe the death of a baby from a stray bullet in Mooiplaas, south of Pretoria, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has said.

"I have now tasked the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) to investigate this incident and to provide us with answers on what led to this tragic death," Mthethwa said in a statement today.

He extended his condolences to the child's family.

"No amount of words can begin to describe my saddened emotions following the loss of an innocent young life."

Earlier, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said police were attempting to stop a crowd from assaulting two men accused of stealing yesterday, when an officer fired a warning shot.

The warning shot ricocheted and the bullet hit the 14-month-old child and its mother.

The mother was taken to hospital, along with two police members who were injured while rescuing the two men.

On Friday, Mthethwa warned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

"Society's task is to report the perpetrators of crime to the police, and in turn police have a duty to apprehend those who torment society," he said at the official opening of the Lamberts Bay Police Station.
