Irate residents demand bail for ET murder accused

2010-05-19 10:17

About 50 black Ventersdorp residents gathered outside the town’s

court to demand the release on bail of Chris Mahlangu, who is accused of killing

AWB leader Eugene Terre’Blanche.

Last week they handed a memorandum to the court in support of their

demand.

“We handed it to the court last week because we want Chris and the

minor released,” said resident Letlhogonolo Makhaya who was at the

courthouse.

“In this area, white people get bail and blacks don’t – the court

must (support equality),” she said.

Residents are aggrieved that three weeks ago a white man who

allegedly raped his black domestic worker was granted bail of R1 000, and they

wanted the same for Mahlangu.

They said that although they did not know Mahlangu personally, they

planned to stay at the court for the day.

Meanwhile police, some on horseback, monitored the situation.

Two men in khaki outfits caused a minor stir when people saw that

they were carrying firearms, but police said they were allowed to do so,

provided they had a licence to carry them.

Among the small crowd gathered at the court were a few people

wearing clothing with the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) triple seven

insignia.
