Irish rights organisation pays tribute to Asmal

2011-06-30 11:15

The Participation and Practice of Rights (PPR) Project in Northern Ireland paid tribute to ANC stalwart Kader Asmal today.

“Kader will be remembered for his service in building a future of hope for all the people of South Africa and for his unswerving support for justice,” chairman Inez McCormack said in a statement.

He said Asmal had encouraged PPR to get its project off the ground.

The PPR Project is a Irish human rights group which was founded Belfast in 2001.

“Kader will be remembered for the service he gave to shaping a future based on justice in his beloved South Africa.

“He will be remembered by me and many others not just for that but for the unstinting support he gave to those who were in other struggles for justice and who lived in very narrow spaces,” McCormack said.

An official memorial service for Asmal was held in Cape Town today.

Asmal died at the age of 76 in hospital in Cape Town last Wednesday after a heart attack, and was cremated in Maitland, Cape Town, on Saturday.

He was the minister of water affairs and forestry from 1994, a member of the ANC’s national executive committee, and education minister from 1999.

He was also qualified as a barrister in both the London and Dublin Bars. – Sapa
