Is embattled North West premier out?

2010-11-17 16:36

North West premier Maureen Modiselle’s days at the helm of the provincial government may be numbered.

City Press understands the embattled premier met with President Jacob Zuma in Cape Town where she would be told that she was being recalled.

ANC deputy secretary-general Thandi Modise is rumoured to be the next premier of the province.

It has also emerged that the provincial ANC task team, which is an interim care-taker structure set up to run the party after the elected leadership was dissolved, has resolved to recall four MECs. The affected members of the provincial cabinet are Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs MEC Gordon Kegakilwe, Education MEC Johannes Tselapedi, Public Safety MEC Howard Yawa, and Health MEC Rebecca Kasienyane.

The decision to sack them was taken at a meeting of the ANC in Mafikeng today.

It’s not clear yet when their replacements will be announced.

ANC interim task team chairperson Saki Mofokeng could not confirm or deny the news of the reshuffle or what would happen to the premier.

“Don’t ask me about the reshuffle. My lips are (sealed). The leadership will make an announcement at the right time and we will talk on the details,” he said.

North West government spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe confirmed that there “have been some developments” but referred questions to the provincial ANC office.

“I can confirm that the premier had an important meeting in Cape Town, but can’t confirm the purpose or the outcome. As government we would be fully apprised about developments before we make a pronouncement,” Mfoloe said.
