Is it time for Vavi to go?

Outspoken critic of corruption is now himself accused of graft.

Once upon a time, there was one Zwelinzima Vavi, who claimed he would never ever in his life support anyone charged with corruption.

He did not care whether such a person was found – by the courts – to be guilty or not.

All that mattered to him was to distance himself from anyone charged with corruption.

Unsurprisingly, Vavi warmed his way into the welcoming hearts of the media, with his name firmly guaranteed space on every South African street as he made headlines.

Some leaders had warned before that you should get worried when you are suddenly a darling of the media. Unfortunately, the ubiquitous Vavi did not heed that warning.

He continued to surreptitiously attack the Jacob Zuma-led ANC and the media loved him for that.

Today he finds his name among the corrupt. Does he now want the people of South Africa to support him?

Does he want people to believe him when he claims he is clean and that all this is merely part of a smear campaign?

Vavi has publicly criticised the ANC, probably fiercer and louder than he has supported political education for Cosatu members.

He has distanced himself from the ANC more than he has encouraged the workers to join and participate in the true vanguard of the working class, the SA Communist Party.

That in itself is enough corruption for any sensible worker to call for Vavi to peacefully vacate his Cosatu general secretary seat.
