Israeli tank kills Palestinian in Gaza

2011-04-09 07:36

Gaza City – An Israeli tank round killed a Palestinian in an eastern neighbourhood of Gaza City early today, bringing to 12 the number of people killed in the territory in the past 24 hours, medics said.

A second Palestinian was wounded in the shelling, the medics added, without specifying whether the casualties were militants or civilians.

Tank fire and air raids yesterday had killed 11 Palestinians, four of them militants of the Islamist Hamas movement which rules Gaza, in the territory’s deadliest day since a devastating 22-day conflict ended in January 2009.

Both the European Union and the United Nations called for an immediate halt to the hostilities, which erupted after an anti-tank round fired by Gaza militants hit a school bus in Israel, seriously wounding a teenager and triggering the Israeli reprisals.
