It’s aggro and it’s sold out

Any person who would spend nearly half-a-million rand on a Ford must be a lunatic or else must have a big (and I mean really big) bank balance. With that said, if the cars of today were anything like the Ford Mustangs or Thunderbirds of a few years ago, then I would also splash out.

It’s been almost two years since the Ford Focus RS was released in Europe and a few models have finally made their way to South Africa. However, if you are a Focus ST owner and just got excited by the Focus RS news, it’s all for nothing as only 60 units were allocated for us and all are already sold out!

The RS is the “big daddy” of the Ford Focus models with front-wheel-drive, and only 4 000 units were made available globally. It is the latest performance offering since the 1970s when only a few Escort RS models were sold. In essence, it is the epitome of sporty cars in the stable.

The current ST will cost you just over R300 000 for the top-of-the-range model which holds 155kW of power and 330Nm of torque pushing from the 2.5 litre engine. The RS engine is still a 2.5 litre but has been tweaked and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox to push out 224kW of power and 440Nm of torque.

The RS was designed to fulfil the promise of being the ultimate production Focus model. It was specially designed with every detail focusing on track performance matching equal importance to road behaviour.

The RS has a larger turbo than the ST, comes standard with stability and control systems, and the RevoKnuckle suspension set-up.

The RevoKnuckle set-up is suitable for both road and track driving, and with the wider body and wheel base it helps the front-wheel-drive handle the high torque and maintain the car’s balance.

On the looks side, the car rests on 19-inch wheels which fit snugly into the bigger wheel arches . Almost every body panel has been redesigned on the outside and the interior is laced with a carbon trim, RS badging, aluminium pedals and Recaro-sculptured racing seats. The rear roof spoiler and the bumper are both black, making it aggressive.

To add to the already obvious sporty personality, the gear lever is much shorter and there are additional gauges on the dashboard. It comes in three body colours: ultimate green, performance blue and white. Although it’s a three-door, it can be used as a family car. The boot is big enough to carry luggage for a weekend away.
