It’s game on as Motlanthe accepts nomination

2012-12-12 18:58

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has accepted nomination to stand for election as ANC president in Mangaung.

According to a source close to him, Motlanthe received a call from the ANC’s electoral commission today, and indicated that he would stand.

A second, independent source on the ANC NEC confirmed this to City Press.

His spokesperson, Thabo Masebe, refused to comment, and referred queries to the commission.

Motlanthe will now face off against President Jacob Zuma, the man who was his running mate in Polokwane five years ago.

Current ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa was quoted by Eyewitness News as having accepted nomination as deputy president.

He will take on Cyril Ramaphosa, who is the favourite of ANC branches to take over from Motlanthe.

City Press understands that a few ANC leaders went to a place on Jan Smuts Avenue in Parktown, Johannesburg, where they signed their nominations forms ahead of the conference this weekend.
