It’s payback time, says Lions’ Toyana

The title is within reach, Highveld Lions coach Geoffrey Toyana said ahead of their final Sunfoil Series match against the Warriors in Port Elizabeth.

The match starts on Thursday.

The Lions need to beat the Warriors and hope the Cape Cobras slip up against the Knights in Bloemfontein.

“The guys have played well enough this year and we know that if we perform to our full potential, our guys can come through,” Toyana said.

“It has been quite good for us this year and the skills have been good. The biggest thing that has been our downfall has been the rain. Hopefully we will get a full game.”

The Lions had a chance to keep up with the table-topping Cobras, who are on 111.26 points. The Lions are second with 101.6.

They had to chase down a steep 387 against the Knights in Kimberley on Sunday. Rain had the last say but Toyana said his charges are still positive going into the final round of fixtures.

“It has been disappointing for us in the last three weeks and the last two games were marred by rain. If we play well enough at St George’s Park we might even be champions,” said Toyana.

Toyana, who was part of the Lions team that won the then SuperSport Series in 1999, said an excellent performance on the weekend could cap off a good season but he’s wary of the Warriors, who inflicted an eight-wicket beating on them in their first clash at the Wanderers.

“At the start of the season, we said that we wanted to be competitive in all competitions and the guys have certainly done that,” Toyana said.

“They (the Warriors) have beaten us once this year and I hope we can pay them back this week ... If we beat them, we will be champions if the Cobras draw against the Knights. We’ll need a favour from the Knights.”
