It’s ready, set, go for SA athletics

2012-02-15 10:13

The domestic track and field season will take off in 10 days’ time.

The Yellow Pages Inter-provincial first leg in Germiston on February 25 will mark the start to a bumper programme that culminates in an international and continental championships late in the year.

The Olympic Games in London from July 27 to August 12 is no doubt the ultimate for athletes who harbours to be part of the Games’ history.

Said Athletics South Africa president James Evans: “This is a big year for Athletics South Africa and we must really support our athletes in their quest for glory this year.

“We have the Olympics athletics programme in August, the World Junior Champs in Barcelona (July), the African Senior Champs (in Benin in June) among the bigger events in the athletics calendar.”

With the deadline for track and field Olympics qualification set at June 30, athletes have been given an added motivation to go an extra mile in the Yellow Pages events.

The sponsors said during the launch yesterday that the R200?000 cash incentive that was introduced last season would be rewarded to anyone who attains the A-standard qualifier and break the record.
