It’s time for Mandela Day again

2011-03-26 14:15

The build-up to the annual Nelson Mandela International Day will start in Johannesburg on Monday, March 28 with a call to action to make the world a better place.

Spokesperson for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, says the launch is designed to educate people that Mandela Day is not a one-day-a-year event, but “all year round”.

Launched in 2009, the United Nations declared July 18, Madiba’s birthday, Nelson Mandela International Day.

“It is a call to action for people everywhere to take responsibility and make the world a better place. Last year it was marked by acts of goodwill in communities throughout the world,” Hatang says.

This year the foundation will rely heavily on social network platforms to link people across the globe, to promote Mandela Day, and to spur on challenges between communities to showcase their actions and motivate each other.

The global response to the annual Mandela Day campaign has exceeded all expectations, Hatang says.

The campaign slogan, “Take Action, Inspire Change. Make Every Day a Mandela Day”, will again be used this year.

“It is our hope that Mandela Day will become a massive global movement of good,” Hatang says.

UN Resident Coordinator Agostino Zacharias will address the launch on Monday, together with a group of six learners from various schools who will share their views on why Mandela Day is important for all of us.
