Ivory Park floods: 43 families evacuated

2011-01-18 07:22

Forty-three families have been evacuated from Ivory Park, north of Johannesburg since yesterday as floods swept through the area, emergency services said.

“Emergency services are still at the scene and the operation centre is still operational in Ivory Park,” spokesperson Percy Morokane said.

“We are dealing with a situation where people are still displaced. Those people will be provided with relief material until they find their feet.”

Emergency services would continue to monitor areas identified as flooding “hot spots”.

Emergency calls started coming through after midnight yesterday from the Thembakazi informal settlement. People were evacuated from that settlement, as well as from Rabie Ridge and Ebony Park.

Yesterday four people were rescued in separate incidents when they were swept away in their vehicles as the Hennops River pushed through Centurion, Pretoria.

At the same time, emergency personnel were moving through the smallholdings along the river bank to make sure everybody was accounted for, since they first started receiving worried calls after midnight as the river roiled through the farming belt.

They were told of a number of people who were unaccounted for, but were hoping they had simply stayed away from home.

The rescues were all in the Centurion area.
