Jacaranda FM, Thobela FM, Radio Pulpit and Tuks FM took home the Best Station Award in their respective categories at the 6th annual MTN Radio awards which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre last night.

Despite being the most nominated station, Gauteng based Talk Radio 702 missed out on the best station accolade but took home numerous other awards including Best Afternoon Drive Show for Xolani Gwala's show, Best Daytime Show for the Redi Thlabi Show, Best on-air packaging, Best business and finance show and Best Content Producer in the commercial radio awards.

Radio Pretoria took home both the My Station Most Loyal and My Station Most Votes awards.

Four-time campus station of the year award winner Tuks FM 107.2 emerged as the best of the campus stations after scooping various awards including best afternoon drive, best on-air promotion/stunt/event and best night-time show in the campus categories.

The Best Breakfast Show (commercial) went to Cape Town's Good Hope FM, with Guy McDonald.

The six-hour long awards ceremony was hosted by comedian Joey Rasdien who played MC and as well as award presenter. In the interest of getting through the well over 70 awards, winners were not allowed to make thank you speeches, which shaved off over an hour from last year's running time.

The event was attended by some of the industry's best and most popular personalities, managers and owners from all over the country, with the guest of honour being Minister of Communications Faith Mutambi who told the audience of radio professionals: "Radio is not dead... I don't believe radio is dying but you have to repackage your content to attract Gen Y who are attractive for your advertisers." Mutambi also mentioned that a national youth radio station was still ANC policy and that she would be looking into this with the SABC.

Posthumous honours went to Umhlobo Wenene's Saba Mbixane who was one of the Hall of Fame inductees, as well former Radio Zulu and Ukhozi FM announcer King Edward Masinga who was honoured with a lifetime achievement award, which Minister Mutambi accepted on his behalf.

A new version of 'We are the world', against xenophobia, produced by Lindelani Mkhize and featuring various artists, was premiered at the awards. The song features well over 20 artists including Mafikizolo, Donald, Thandiswa Mazwai, Kelly Khumalo, Lloyd Cele, Loyiso Bala, Sfiso Ncwane, Zion from Liquideep, PJ Powers, Danny K and others. Radio stations were encouraged to support the song on their platforms.
