Jackie Selebi: My health is fine

2013-10-08 09:43

Former national police boss and convicted fraudster Jackie Selebi says he is not sick and is “surely” allowed to go out and buy newspapers.

Selebi was pictured in Afrikaans daily Beeld yesterday being chauffeured in his luxury BMW 6-series to a shopping centre in Monument Park, Pretoria, to buy the Sunday papers.

Speaking to The Times, the convicted fraudster said he was not bedridden because he was not sick and said he did not know it was a crime to go out and buy newspapers.

The Times also reported that Selebi was a regular at the Spar at Monument Park Shopping Centre.

Opposition parties yesterday voiced concern with Freedom Front Plus spokesperson Pieter Groenewald saying Selebi’s “shopping spree over the weekend” made a mockery of the country’s justice system.

In July last year, the medical parole board decided that Selebi could be released because he was suffering from irreversible kidney failure, high blood pressure and diabetes.

At the time of his release on medical parole, Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said Selebi was being sent home because his department had limited capacity to provide care for terminally ill patients.

But now Selebi says he is feeling “much, much better” although he will remain on manual dialysis for the rest of his life.

He says other than the dialysis, his health is good.
