Jacob Zuma says ANC is ready for female president

2014-05-05 13:04

President Jacob Zuma has hinted that the ANC and SA might be getting a female president “sooner than you think”.

Speaking to journalists at the ANC’s final breakfast briefing in Joburg before the elections today, Zuma was asked whether the party was ready for a female president.

He said: “Absolutely. I think the country in general is ready. I think if there was a suitable female candidate in the ANC for presidency, the ANC will enthusiastically vote for her.

“The ANC will again give leadership on the matter, maybe sooner than you think.”

There has been speculation that a lobby in the ANC was pushing for African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to run for the party’s presidency at its conference in 2017 or in 2019.

In response to a different question, Zuma said he would step down in 2019 after his second term. “I will be going to my Nkandla,” he said jokingly.
