Former government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi is back, this time behind the scenes.

He is now working as adviser to Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.

Manyi on Saturday night referred queries to Muthambi’s spokesperson, Bongiwe Gambu, and said: “I don’t want to deal with the media.”

Gambu confirmed Manyi was special adviser to Muthambi.

It has also emerged that Donald Liphoko will be appointed government spokesperson after the position was vacant for two years and had Phumla Williams as acting spokesperson.

Liphoko was formerly a chief director in the Government Communications and Information System, and was responsible for advertising and media buying.

His profile on the communications department website makes no mention that he has any experience in being a spokesperson. He is currently listed there as acting director-general.

A department official speculated that Manyi would be using Liphoko’s lack of experience to “manipulate” him from behind the scenes.

Manyi is a controversial figure, who was dropped from government communications just over two years ago because of his strained relationship with journalists.

Manyi is also a senior manager at Rand Water, but it is unclear whether he as yet has official permission to hold two positions in the civil service.

He also hosts a current affairs show on ANN7 where one of his tag lines is: “No comment is not an option.”
