Joburg comes alive with arts

2012-08-31 12:23

Music lovers gather this afternoon to celebrate Joburg’s yearly Jazz on the Lake at Zoo Lake for a music concert that forms part of the Arts Alive Festival.

This year’s bill includes the likes of Thandiswa Mazwai, Vusi Mahlasela, Lira and Maleh.

Arts Alive has other events taking place in the inner city and surrounding townships and suburbs.

These include the M&G Literary Festival taking place at the Laager Theatre in Newtown.

The festival will feature different speakers and panellists from different writing professions to debate and share insights.

Veteran journalists like the M&G’s books editor Darryl Accone, author Sandile Memela and trends analyst
Dion Chang will join the party.

Commuters who use the Rea Vaya bus service will be entertained by buskers commissioned to perform at different bus stops.

Award-winning theatre director James Ngcobo will take to the boards at the Soweto Theatre with Bopha!

It’s a drama about a black family destroyed by apartheid in 1980. The production is based on Percy Mtwa’s autobiographical play.

Many more productions and art exhibitions will be happening as the festival unfolds over 10 days this month.
