Joemat-Pettersson appoints task teams

2015-02-21 09:56

Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson has appointed task teams to investigate allegations facing the SA Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) boards.

“These challenges hinder on the broader mandate of both institutions,” the energy ministry spokesperson Zodwa Visser said yesterday.

“This investigation has been prompted by numerous complaints and allegations levelled against board members and the management of both strategic institutions.”

The allegations related to serious mismanagement regarding corporate governance and management issues.

Joemat-Pettersson, noting the important role played by the two institutions in the nuclear sector, believed the concerns raised with her should be addressed and resolved.

“If left unattended, they may adversely impact on the effectiveness of the Board in overseeing and guiding Necsa and NRWDI operations,” Visser said.

“The task team will investigate and report back to the minister on all matters of concern.”

Task team members would include officials from the department, the mineral resources department, the international relations & cooperation department, and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

“The boards of both institutions have been requested to cooperate with the task team to carry out its work efficiently and effectively,” said Visser.

“The task team is expected to conclude its investigation and submit a report to the minister of energy on or before March 31 2015.”
