Jomo Sono gets pat on the back from Fifa president Sepp Blatter

2014-05-23 16:59

Jomo Sono has received a personal note from Fifa president Sepp Blatter, who congratulated the Jomo Cosmos coach on being awarded a national order recently.

Blatter wrote: “This award is richly deserved in view of all you have done for football, both as a player, coach and administrator. Your continued contribution to the game does the global football community proud and I look forward to your further endeavours to promote and serve the game inside and outside SA.”

Last month the Order of Ikhamanga in silver was bestowed upon Sono for his contribution to the development of football.

The man nicknamed Troublemaker during his heyday said he was humbled by the gesture from the world football controlling body’s head honcho.

“I am really honoured to have received a personal letter from Sepp Blatter,” said Sono.

The legendary former Orlando Pirates midfielder was among five sports stars who received the award from President Jacob Zuma on Freedom Day.

Sono was honoured alongside 800m star Caster Semenya, swimmer Cameron van der Burgh, Paralympian sprinter Fanie van der Merwe and wheelchair tennis ace Lucas Sithole.
