Joost, Amor bury the hatchet

2012-03-19 09:23

Former rugby player Joost van der Westhuizen and his estranged wife, singer Amor Vittone, have called a truce.

Vittone celebrated her 40th birthday on Friday with a party at Montecasino in Johannesburg for 40 guests, complete with a cake decorated with a little piano and the words of the song You Raise Me Up.

Hurt people
She and Van der Westhuizen have now both said they regret their public fighting and accusations of infidelity in interviews with the media.

“We ask the public for respect and support in this difficult time of divorce,” said Vittone.

Rapport newspaper learned that the estranged couple had reached an agreement and that the divorce will soon be finalised.

According to Van der Westhuizen, he realised that he “hurt people” in interviews “who were not involved in the breakdown of my marriage”.

Third parties
Singer Kurt Darren and Dr Jody Pearl, Van der Westhuizen’s former doctor, were both dragged into the public spat.

“I hope that Amor and I can bury our anger and that both of us will stop discussing our private lives in public,” said the former Bok No 9, who has been diagnosed with motor neuron disease.

“Through discussing our problems in public, we only hurt our children and involve third parties unnecessarily.”

Vittone also admits that it was “not a good idea to involve third parties in our quarrels”. She says she still loves Van der Westhuizen because he is the father of her children.

Edith Venter and Cindy Nell-Roberts were among the celebrities who attended Amor’s party.
