SA Football Association (Safa) presidential candidate Danny Jordaan’s car was broken into and crucial documents were stolen in Morningside on Friday.

Jordaan will go head-to-head with Safa co-vice-president Mandla Mazibuko in the elections on September 29 to determine who will take over from Kirsten Nematandani, who has not been nominated.

City Press learnt yesterday that Jordaan’s car was broken into at a shopping mall in Morningside near Sandton, in what some within football believe was sabotage and has led to speculation that it has something to do with the football body’s polls.

A source close to Jordaan said the 2010 World Cup chief executive lost most of what he had in the car, including election documents.

“This is a clear attempt to sabotage our campaign,” said the source within the Football Transformation Forum, which has nominated Jordaan as its presidential candidate.

“He is more worried about his iPad, which contains a whole lot of information.

“There was also a file of how Safa regions nominated. You must realise that if he does not make it, then there will only be one candidate, hence we believe the break-in was well-orchestrated, as the security guards claim to have seen nothing.”

Jordaan confirmed the break-in and the theft, but denied claims that it had anything to do with the elections.

He said: “This was just a theft and I reported the matter to Colonel Pillay at the Sandton Police Station.”

Jordaan said that a suitcase full of clothes was among the items stolen, as he was to leave for Durban to attend yesterday’s Bafana Bafana World Cup qualifier against Botswana.

There was also the iPad and a bag that had cash in it, along with his sunglasses.

“I can just say it was an information theft, as the iPad had all my crucial information.”

Midrand’s SA Police Service spokesperson, constable Matome Tlamela, said: “A case of theft out of a motor vehicle was reported at Sandton Police Station on September 6 at about 5pm.

“The suspect has stolen an amount of R3?000, a briefcase containing documents and an iPad, all of which have an estimated value of R12?000.

“No one has been arrested yet as the police are still busy with the investigations concerning the matter.”
