Jub Jub defence speaks out against media negligence

2010-03-20 09:41

“Those who are clamouring for justice must be the first to respect

the machinery of justice,” said defence counsel Ike Motloung for Molemo “Jub

Jub” Maarohanye at his bail hearing.

Motloung said that that which the media has reported as fact was

yet to be established and that the media “fermented an atmosphere they wanted to

see”.

He also said: “Before and until the media got involved in this

matter, there was no violence. The overarching concern in this whole matter is

the assumption of innocence until proven guilty.”

His fear was what could happen if the message went out to the whole

of South Africa that if people want to oppose bail, the level of violence and

threat would be determinants when people get bail. “I shudder at this,” he said,

“Until these people are taken into trial, the law says that they must be dealt

with as people who are innocent.”

The defence for Themba Tshabalala, Mlungiseleni Soviti said the

incarceration of accused number two has deprived his family and that of his five

employees of their livelihood.

“The public outcry is uninformed and ignorant. The public believe

there was drag racing when in fact there was none,” he said.
