Rapper Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye was yesterday allowed out of prison to attend his grandmother’s funeral in Soweto after winning an urgent court order on Friday.

He was forced to go to court after the Department of Correctional Services denied his request for compassionate leave, said the department.

Maarohanye and co-accused Themba Tshabalala were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murder and other related charges in December last year.

The two were drag racing in 2010 and crashed into a group of Soweto schoolboys, leaving four dead and two permanently brain damaged.

Earlier this week Jub Jub’s bid to have his conviction overturned in the Protea Magistrates’ Court failed.

He has served about two months of his sentence. Sunday Sun photographer Trevor Kunene captured the disgraced rapper – wearing a suit and sporting his cornrow hairstyle – at the Avalon cemetery. He was escorted by correctional services personnel in leg irons.

Lukas Muntingh, project coordinator for the Civil Society Prison Reform Initiative, said legislation “does allow for prisoners to attend significant events such as a funeral, which are determined on a case-by-case basis”.
