Juju calls delegates to order

2011-06-16 13:31

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema was forced to call his own supporters to order at the league’s congress in Midrand today.

“Can we respond in an ANC manner, not becoming factional,” he said after delegates shouted “Juju, Juju” while he greeted them, instead of the customary salutation of “viva”.

“No one is going to disrupt this conference in my name.”

A picture of unity would be a “glorious gift” for the ANC when it turned 100 (on January 8), he said.

Earlier, chairman of Gauteng youth league Lebogang Maile, a rival to Malema’s presidency, was booed as delegates chanted “Juju, Juju”.

Malema said ANC president Jacob Zuma had the support of the league.

“These are the people who delivered you in Polokwane, these are the people who delivered you to the Union Buildings,” he said of Zuma. “They are your protectors.”

The league was a vociferous supporter of Zuma against former president Thabo Mbeki at the governing party’s conference to elect a new president in 2007.
