Juju fashion line without his stamp of approval

2012-01-28 18:39

The young designer of a fashion label inspired by ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema is hoping the firebrand will grace the launch next month.

OB Fitted’s Obakeng Ramabodu said his range, controversially made in China, would be unveiled on the Waterland Farm in two weeks’ time.

He ambitiously added that the resort farm could take about 5 000 people.

“We can’t confirm that Julius will be at the launch, but he will be invited,” he said. “If he is not at the launch I will meet him at another time, because he was the inspiration for the range.”

Invites were set to go out this week and Malema had not yet been approached, he said.

Malema has in the past distanced himself from the project.

Ramabodu, who is close to youth league national executive committee member Thabo Kupa, said he would try to reach Malema either through Kupa or through the league’s usual communications channels.

Kupa yesterday said he was a friend of Ramabodu’s as they both came from Tshwane.

He described Ramabodu as “an innovative entrepreneur, a young man who needs support”, and added “I know (Malema) has no problem with the Juju label.”

The range included T-shirts at a cost of R350 each, vests priced for R300, caps which are R200 and berets that are worth R250.

Despite the rather steep prices, Ramabodu said it was not just aimed at the well-heeled but “the ordinary people on the ground”.
