Juju sanctions to take effect after mitigation

2012-02-06 07:40

The sanctions against suspended ANC Youth League president Julius Malema will only take effect after mitigation.

“You will know that the NDCA (national disciplinary committee of appeal) said that they have a chance to go and mitigate, so until such mitigation has taken place the sanctions will not kick in,” ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu is reported as saying.

“There is another matter which has been raised. It is a matter of comrade Julius’ (Malema) case of 2010 because he got a suspended sentence but I think the leadership has decided that there is no particular hurry.

“Why don’t we allow all these matters to be held simultaneously?” he asked.

According to the SABC radio news, Malema was attending the ANC’s national executive committee meeting in Pretoria as a full member yesterday.

On Saturday, the national disciplinary committee of appeal rejected the attempts by Malema, youth league spokesperson Floyd Shivambu and four others to have their suspension from the party overturned.

They were found guilty in November of bringing the party into disrepute and of sowing division within the party.

Malema now has a 14-day reprieve to argue for a lesser sentence.
