The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, said the 2014 elections will be “the elections of the red beret”, referencing his party’s signature head gear.

At a press conference at the Easy Hotel in central Johannesburg this afternoon, he accused the ANC of imitating the party by distributing 50 000 red berets sporting ANC logos ahead of the party’s manifesto launch in Mpumalanga this weekend.

“We are not perturbed by dying and crisis-ridden organisations that lack creativity and choose to imitate what the EFF does and represents,” he said.

“The EFF is a trendsetter and there are still many other things political parties will copy from us because we are relevant and will be relevant until elections victory.”

Malema said the ANC had no creativity left, unlike in 2009 when its youth league (under Malema’s leadership) introduced motorbikes and “bling” to the elections campaign.

He said that was the 2009 legacy, and the 2014 elections legacy will be red berets.

He said the EFF was contesting the elections to win.

The party is planning to launch its manifesto in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni on February 22.
